Head & Neck Radiology Made Easy
Round up of our April 2024 Conference in Melbourne
Led by Dr Robin Cassumbhoy MBBS FRANZCR, Radiologist at DiagnosticCare East Keilor, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and Western Health, Saturday 27th April was a day to focus once again on Head & Neck Imaging.
The conference updates provided a thorough Head & Neck anatomy review and pathology correlation, with those all-important tips and tricks. Using a systematic approach for evaluation of Head and Neck cases, we were taken on an interpretation journey, using an approach ‘Robin’s Rules’.
With over one hundred Consultant Radiologists, Fellows and Radiology Registrars joining us at Monash University Caulfield, we were ready for as day of illustrative cases, that might be encountered in daily practice.
The day’s case review highlights…
We kicked of the morning with a session revieing the Pharynx, Larynx and Oral Cavity. This was followed by and in-depth review of Cervical Nodes including levels and pathology correlation.
After a break for morning tea, which allowed everyone the opportunity to meet with old friends from previous rotations, and to greet Radiologists and Registrars on their first visit to Melbourne, we kicked off with the next session.
Petrous Temporal Bone and Facial Nerves were the next topics of review, moving on to cases looking at CT of the Trigeminal Nerve and MRI case examples including Pterygopalatine Fossa.
We then stopped for lunch, providing an opportunity to relax and take in the mornings key Imaging updates. We also welcomed guest speaker, Dr Daniel Chin (Senior Radiology Registrar and Western Health) who provided a dedicated session providing ‘Tips for the Part 2 Exam’.
Our afternoon of Head and Neck Radiology focussed of Parapharyngeal, Parotid and Masticator Space Review. We then delved into a range of Head & Neck Imaging cases focussing on Carotid Space, Pharynx, Larynx, Nodes and Retropharyngeal.
After a break for afternoon tea, we reviewed our final cases of the day including Petrous Temporal, Parotid, V/VII Cranial Nerves, Oral and Nasal Cavity.
Round up of the day…
It was an extremely useful day especially for those preparing for the Part 2 FRANZCR exam, Robin’s energy and enthusiasm combined with her unique approach to anatomical pathological correlation really ‘made it easy’, or at least easier to accurately and more confidently diagnose a range of head and neck conditions.
The course was convened by Dr Daniel Saddik and Dr Con Tartaglia, founders of Imaging Conferences To Go.
Dr Saddik summarises:
“We have worked with Robin many times over the years, to bring her invaluable Head and Neck Imaging expertise to our Australia and New Zealand diagnostic imaging colleagues.
The day was full of detailed information explained in a simple way, with wonderful schematic illustrations on a range of complex topics. We looked at clear methods of approach e.g. how to interpret a CT petrous-temporal bone scan and at the end of the day everyone left with comprehensive lecture notes.
A great day all round”
